Between June and September 2008 ECCAR member cities organised consultations with young people of their municpalities to discuss the issue of racism and sport. In schools, sports associations, youth councils or via the local media the participants were able to consider the following questions: What actions can cities undertake to counteract racism in sport? How can sport and physical education promote tolerance, mutual respect and solidarity?
Young people between 15 and 18 years of age in the cities of Barcelona (Spain), Bologna (Italy), Botkyrka (Sweden), Erlangen (Germany), Graz (Austria), Malmö (Sween), Nuremberg (Germany), Serres (Greece) and Uppsala (Sweden) dealt intensively and creatively with this topic.
For example more than 80 youths participated in the project in Uppsala (Sweden). They organised three meetings in two districts within the city, namely Stenhagen and Gottsunda. Both districts have a high number of youth with foreign backgrounds. A summary of the Uppsala meetings and contact address is available as donwload: Report of Uppsala
In Serres (Greece) 11 boys and girls worked out a questionnaire in order to discuss the main topic and write down their points of view: Report of Serres
Co-ordinated by the City of Nuremberg’s Human Rights Office, these meetings also served as preparation for the Youth Forum in the context of the 2008 ECCAR General Conference. Therefore the ECCAR municipal authorities selected two representatives among the participating youth to take part in the Youth Forum in Bologna.
